The Liver (The New Byeoljubu Tale)

Bay Area K-Group
ESKAPE
Sunday, September 20 at 3:00 p.m.
**Performance in Korean**
The Liver (The New Byeoljubu Tale) is an original Korean-language musical inspired by the classic Korean folktale "Byeoljubujeon" (The Tale of the Rabbit) reimagined through the lens of artificial intelligence, corporate power, and modern healthcare.
Set in a near-future world where AI increasingly determines access to medical treatment, the story follows Youngwoo, a brilliant developer who dreams of building a fairer healthcare system through an emergency triage algorithm called "The Liver." Driven by the desire to create a world where no one is denied care because of wealth or social status, he pours everything into his work—until ambition, opportunity, and the promise of success lead him into the orbit of the powerful Yonggung Group.
As efficiency becomes the ultimate metric and human lives are reduced to data points, Youngwoo is forced to confront a devastating question: when algorithms decide who deserves to live, what happens to compassion, dignity, and human warmth?
Blending humor, emotional storytelling, and original music, The Liver explores the cost of innovation and the moral weight of progress, inviting audiences to reflect on what should never be optimized away.
Presented by ESKAPE, a music community within Bay Area K-Group, this production is created by Korean-American professionals and community members passionate about music, storytelling, and cultural expression. Bay Area K-Group is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering connection, growth, and community among Korean-American professionals in the Bay Area.
